A personal collection based upon the UCL museums & collections, a Collection of Collections.

About 「Death」

Currently, the only collection launched is 「Death」, a collection of nine objects surrounding the theme of Death. The reason I chose nine objects is in fact related to the theme "Death". In traditional Chinese culture, the number nine holds the symbolic meaning of "eternity and heaven", as it is the largest singular number, and also it is homophone to the word "Jiu" (long).

Collecting from Multi-dimension

a. range of objects

Most of the objects in this collection are physical objects, except for the Galton Collection. It is the entire collection as a whole. This puts me into thinking about the definition of "object".

However, within the catagory of physical objects, there are variations. From human remains to replica to ritual objects, and the blurring zones among them.

b. different perspectives of the theme

The initial idea was to include objects representing both "Collecting the Dead" and "Communicating with the Dead", but throughout the collecting process, the division/distinction between the two became more and more blur.

Throughout the process, three major questions emerged:

1) What is an object?

item types

2) What is collecting the dead?

questions around human remains. pot burial, replica, Jeremy Bentham (his ring)

3) The division/distinction between collecting the dead and communicating with the dead.

(by collecting the dead, are we not communicating with the dead?)

Other problems:

difficult to fill in the information

Technical problem: how to put images on simple pages?
