Description
"The wooden mummy case dates from Dynasty 21 (1069-969 BC) and is covered by cartonnage. Ancient Egyptian cartonnage is a material made from layers of linen or papyrus, coated with gesso (a calcium based mineral substance) and then painted. The mummy case is inscribed with traditional formulae to secure eternal life for the owner, such as, on the coffin lid, two winged discs and a winged scarab beetle.
A mummy case was an important part of funerary equipment for wealthy ancient Egyptians preparing for afterlife. The colour and decoration indicate the social status of the person.
